Chien-Yin Chen (composer/pianist) was born in Taiwan and now resides in New York City. Her style and interests stem from her studies of the music of Conlon Nancarrow as well as the traditional musics of Taiwan and Africa. She gained considerable training in formal theory and composition in Vienna as a student of Diether de la Motte and Kurt Schwertsik. The elements of her training and experience combine in a musical aesthetic where complex rhythmic energy is developed with clarity and precision. She has received recognition and funding for her work from the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the Fromm Foundation, and the American Composers Forum. She has been commissioned by the Ensemble die Riehe (Austria), the Vienna Saxophone Quartet, the Trio Muzika Bizia (Spain), the Talujon Percussion Quartet.
