JUSTINE F. CHEN
Composer/violinist
Justine F. Chen’s inter-disciplinary background attracted critical praise
during her student years ("the kind of propulsive, emotionally resonant
score that choreographers tend to dream of," said the New York Times)
and beyond. Her collaborative resume includes music for numerous theatrical
productions like The Crucible and Macbeth, an acclaimed digital animation film
Trilemm (recently broadcast on PBS), and a computer-enhanced chamber opera
for the Juilliard School to premier in December 2005. She’s also composed
major pieces with choreographers like Alvin Ailey’s Iyun Harrison, and
was Composer-in-Residence of the Appalachian Summer Festival in Boone, North
Carolina, where she worked with choreographer Adam Hougland, a members of The
Juilliard Dance Ensemble, and the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble in the creation
of a total chamber work, Stand Nine. As a violinist, Chen tours extensively
throughout the world with a focus on new music, and sails without effort through
the intricacies of the interactive computer music program MAX/MSP.
