TOM CHIU

photo of tom chiuComposer/violinist Tom Chiu has become a dynamic young force on the American new music scene during the past few years, especially in New York City. He has appeared to great acclaim worldwide
as a soloist, chamber musician, and the inspirational force behind the FLUX quartet. As a frequenct experimental improvisor, he keeps close working relationships with unique figures such as Ornette Coleman, Johnny Reinhard, and avant-garde danceer Eun-Me Ahn. As a composer, his works have been premiered at Queen's College, Galapagos, the Soho Joyce Theater, Indpendent Art HERE, the Walker Art Center in Minnesota, the Melbourne Festival in Austrailia, the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, and Context Studios, home of the downtown Mixed Messages Festival.
Tom has received funding from the Meet-The-Composer and Mary Flagler Foundations, among others. Mr. Chiu has received degrees from Juilliard and Yale, where he did considerable research and a second major in chemistry. On a lighter note, he occasionally reminisces about his role alongside Tom Hanks in the 1984 feature The Man with One Red Shoe.
