PATRICK GRANT
Born
in Detroit, Michigan, Patrick Grant began studying music at age eleven
and won his first composition prize at age 14 for his "Cantata for
the Easter Mass." Since then he has written music for numerous situations
and combinations of players, including new wave rock, cable television,
the Living Theatre, gamelan music, his own ensemble, the Patrick Grant
Group, and various more traditional forces. His opera The Rules of Civility,
whose libretto is a text by George Washington, has been performed more
then 150 times throughout the U.S. and Europe. In addition, he has studied
at Wayne State University, Julliard, and in Bali with Balinese master
musician I Wayan Lantir. Grant has received commissions and performances
from many groups, including the Harvard-Radcliffe Contemporary Music
Ensemble, Music Under Construction, and Switzerland's Prix de Lausanne
International concours for Dance at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, as well
as grants from Meet the Composer.
