ELENA KATS-CHERNIN
Born 1957 in the Uzbekistan capital of Tashkent, Elena Kats-Chernin trained
intensively in both music and figure-skating. When she was eighteen, her
family emigrated to Australia. Kats-Chernin worked in Germany for thirteen
years, composing for state theaters and ballet. She made her artistic
breakthrough with Clocks, a work premiered in 1993 by the Ensemble Modern.
Her airy orchestration sizzles with color and drive, and she has a knack
for catchy, bittersweet tunes that detour into unexpected directions.
