MEREDITH MONK
Winner of a 1995 MacArthur "Genius" Award, Monk certainly emerged at the end of the twentieth century as one of the most important living composers writing for innovative voice and dance performance. She was a pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, and besides composing she also sings, and creates her own opera and musical theater works. She has won numerous awards for her works, which has been performed worldwide, and her music has been heard in numerous films, including La Nouvell Vague by Jean-Luc Godard and The Big Lebowski by Joel and Ethan Coen. Monk has made more than a dozen recordings, most of which
are on the ECM New Series label.
