NURSE KAYA
Six
adventurous musicians combine influences from the classical, jazz, rock,
folk and avant-garde worlds to create original music as the Nurse Kaya
String Quartet –– Kenji Bunch (viola), Cornelius Dufallo
(violin), Tim Kiah (bass), Rubin Kodheli (cello), Jesse Mills (violin),
Chris Vatalaro (drums). And why not a string quartet with drums and bass?
Free and structured improvisation, radical notation, plus indeterminate
procedures contribute to each member’s singular compositional voice.
All are graduates of the Juilliard and Eastman schools of music, and
have performed with Ornette Coleman, Oliver Lake, the Orpheus Chamber
Orchestra and the FLUX quartet.
Highlights from Nurse Kaya’s 2002/03 season include performances at The
Knitting Factory, Galapagos, ASCAP’s Through the Walls series at The Cutting
Room (NYC), and the Hancock County Jail (ME); a live broadcast on WNYC; a residency
at Bennington College (VT).
With its name inspired by bassist Tim Kiah’s former profession as a registered
nurse, Nurse Kaya proposes a metaphor for the role of the artist as a healing
influence. They put their philosophy to work by performing at unconventional
venues, along with more traditional gigs at Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society,
Marlboro School of Music and Oslo Chamber Music Festival.
