NKEIRU OKOYE

photo of Nkeiru OkoyeComposer, conductor, and performer Nkeiru Okoye has had works programmed by the Virginia, Detroit, New Jersey and the Richmond Symphonies. American born of Nigerian and African American heritage, her music draws from an array of idioms ranging from the European Classical tradition to popular music and the cultures of West African and African Americans. Okoye is a frequent guest lecturer on the music of African American composers. She has received numerous awards and honors for her music, including an ASCAP Foundation Young Composer Award. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Music Theory and Composition from Rutgers University. Okoye is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
