TOBY TWINING

Toby Twining is one of America¹s leading innovators in the field of vocal music. He grew up in Texas, where his grandfather was a Country Swing guitarist and grandmother a Gospel pianist. As a young guitarist and songwriter Twining absorbed indigenous and popular music. He later studied with Ben Johnston and composed for dance.
Twining's early multi-tracked vocal compositions, co-produced with Mark Rubel at Pogopianist. Records in Champaign, Illinois, became popular with modern dance choreographers worldwide, including Gus Solomons, Viola Farber and Ruth Currier. Some of Twining¹s instrumental music has been recorded by Margaret Leng Tan on The Art of Toy Piano from which one work, Satie Blues, endures as her signature piece in concerts nationally and abroad. Twining premiered the opera roles of Lorenz in Chaos by Michael Gordon (¹98) and the Architectural Historian/Building Manager in Carbon
