PROGRAM NOTES

That a small, chronically underfunded yet tenacious new music organization like ComposersCollaborative has lasted, survived and thrived since 1987 speaks volumes, not just for our audiences, artists and supporters, but also for the vision of its late co-founder and producing manager Célia Cooke, who died in March 2011. I’m grateful for all of the generous tributes and contributions to CCi in her memory.

However, what few people know is that Célia intensely pursued a photography hobby, yielding more than 1200 Polaroids over 30 years, mostly abstract compositions. To ring in CCI’s 25th anniversary, the Cornelia Street Café will host and present the first public showing of her photos. The opening takes place on January 10 2012, and I’ll keep you posted with further details.

I first met Ana Milosavljelic and Demetrus Spaneas in 2007, when both composer/performers played Terry Riley’s In C along with 150 others for the first Make Music New York Festival on June 21 2007 right outside on Cornelia Street. Their enthusiasm and energy resonated like crazy. More importantly, each has become a close friend and colleague, and it seems fitting for them share a double bill on this season’s second Serial Underground show. I’m also happy to be playing piano with them tonight as well. Visit Ana’s website here and visit Demetrius here.

Have a joyful, peaceful, bountiful and safe holiday season. Enjoy the show!
